"Following discussions at the Presidential Transition Council, after hearings with candidates selected for the post of prime minister, Garry Conille was chosen by consensus to lead the transitional government," declared the president of the Haitian body, Edgard Leblanc.

Conille was appointed with the favorable vote of six of the seven members of the council, which began work a month ago, according to sources consulted by the Spanish news agency EFE.

One of the candidates for the post, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, has already congratulated Conille on social media: "I extend my sincere congratulations to the prime minister designated by the Presidential Transition Council, Garry Conille. I am a convinced patriot. Long live Haiti!"

The former Haitian finance minister Michel Patrick Boisvert was the one who held the position of interim prime minister, following the resignation of Ariel Henry.

Meanwhile, the former head of the sports portfolio Fritz Belizaire had been appointed head of government by the majority group of the Presidential Transition Council, but the unilateral decision caused a crisis in the institution, leading to the opening of an application process for the position.

Conille, 58, was head of government between September 2011 and February 2012, during the administration of Michel Martelly, but resigned after a conflict with his own cabinet.

He has held the position of regional director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023.

The appointment comes at a time when Haiti awaits the arrival of the multinational security support mission, led by Kenya and approved by the United Nations, to curb the violence of armed groups in the country.

Last year, eight thousand people were victims of violence in the country, insecurity that has increased even more since the end of February.
