Marking "severe heatwave", authorities registered record temperatures at two stations, Narela and Mungeshpur, on the outskirts of New Delhi.

In May 2022, thermometers had touched 49.2°C in parts of the capital, Indian media reported at the time.

Soaring temperatures are common in India during the summer, but experts say climate change is making heatwaves longer, more frequent and more intense.

New Delhi authorities have also warned of the risk of water shortages, with cuts already reported in some areas.

Water Minister Atishi Marlena appealed for "collective responsibility" from residents to stop wastage, the Times of India newspaper reported on Monday.

"To tackle the water shortage problem, we have taken a number of steps such as reducing the water supply from twice a day to once a day in many areas," the Indian Express quoted Marlena as saying.

India's weather service has warned of the health impacts of the heat, particularly for children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

Meanwhile, the northeastern states of West Bengal and Mizoram have been hit by high winds and torrential rain as Cyclone Remal crossed into India from Bangladesh on Sunday, killing more than 38 people.

Bangladesh's meteorological department said the storm was one of the longest-lasting to hit the country and blamed climate change for its exceptional duration.
