In a brief statement, the army said a "ramming attack" had occurred near the town of Nablus, close to an Israeli settlement.

Asked by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the army later said "two Israeli civilians were killed", without specifying their identities.

According to Israeli media, the army immediately launched a manhunt to try to locate the perpetrator of the alleged attack, which comes against the backdrop of a war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the Palestinian Islamist movement's attack on Israeli soil on 7 October.

In an Arabic-language statement, Hamas hailed the "ramming attack" near Nablus, calling it "a natural response" to the "crimes of the enemy".

On 7 October last year, Israel declared war on the Gaza Strip to "eradicate" the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas after it carried out an unprecedented attack on Israeli territory hours earlier, killing 1,189 people, most of them civilians.

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) - in power in Gaza since 2007 and classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel - also took 252 hostages, 121 of whom remain in captivity and 37 have since died, according to the latest figures from the Israeli army.

The war, which entered its 236th day today and continues to threaten to spread throughout the Middle East, has so far left more than 36,100 dead, 81,400 wounded and around 10,000 missing in the Gaza Strip, presumed buried in the rubble, most of them civilians, according to updated figures from local authorities.

The conflict has also caused almost two million displaced persons, plunging the overpopulated and impoverished Palestinian enclave into a serious humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.1 million people in a "catastrophic hunger situation" that is claiming victims - "the highest number ever recorded" by the UN in food security studies worldwide.

Also in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, at least 510 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or in settler attacks since 7 October.
