Taiwan independence is a declaration of war, Beijing says
China warned today that any eventual independence of Taiwan would be equivalent to a declaration of war and that there will be no peace in the event of secession.

The Chinese military "assumes the sacred mission of safeguarding the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said at a press conference in Beijing, quoted by the official People's Daily.
Wu said that Chinese forces "have always been on high alert to defeat any secessionist attempts" on the island and are watching out to "prevent interference by any external forces."
"The reunification of the motherland is an unstoppable historical trend," he said, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.
Wu's warning comes amid growing tensions between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan following the May 20 inauguration of the island's President William Lai.
In his first speech as president, Lai reiterated Taiwan's commitment to its sovereignty.
China responded over the weekend with military exercises in the vicinity of Taiwan, which it described as a "firm punishment" of pro-independence Taiwanese forces.
China's Defense Ministry recently warned that it will again "take countermeasures" if "secessionist forces seeking independence continue to provoke."
This policy will be maintained "until the complete reunification of the country is achieved," the ministry said.
Taiwan is the island to which the Chinese Nationalist army retreated after being defeated by Communist troops in the civil war in 1949.
Since then, it has been governed autonomously.
China claims sovereignty over the island, which it considers a rebellious province and does not rule out the use of force to reunify it.
