The Israeli military has confirmed it has withdrawn from Jabalia in the Gaza Strip, where it has been fighting for the past three weeks, Al Jazeera reports.
Israeli troops have “completed their mission” in the area and are ready for further operations, the military said, after fighting that has killed hundreds, Al Jazeera reports.
The bodies of seven captured Israeli hostages have also been recovered, and 10 kilometres of underground tunnels have been destroyed.
Al Jazeera reports that the fighting has reduced Jabalia, home to a refugee camp, to rubble.
"The whole area is gone. People cannot find their homes. We don't even know if we will find our relatives. This is a crime," one resident told the news agency as he returned to the area.
Since the war began, Israel and Hamas have only agreed to one week-long truce, in late November, which saw 105 hostages released in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.
In addition, four hostages were released by Hamas in October, three were rescued by the military – two in a successful raid on Rafah in February – and the bodies of 20 hostages have been recovered, three of whom were killed by Israeli troops in a friendly fire incident in December.
