Former US president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump announced he had joined social media platform TikTok on Saturday night, amassing over 1.4 million followers in less than a day.
Despite the business magnate, who was recently convicted of 34 criminal counts for falsifying business records to conceal hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, having previously attempted to ban TikTok in 2020 over alleged national security concerns, the move is seen as an attempt to engage with younger generations ahead of a potential run for the White House against President Joe Biden.
Trump marked the launch of his account by posting a video on Saturday night of him greeting fans at the Ultimate Fighting Championship in Newark, New Jersey.

Indeed, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said that “no stone will be left unturned” and that the businessman’s TikTok presence “represents continued outreach to a younger audience that consumes pro-Trump, anti-Biden content”, according to Reuters.
Trump already has a significant social media presence, with over 87 million followers on Twitter and over seven million followers on his own platform, Truth Social, where he posts near-daily.
It comes as Biden signed a bill into law that would ban the app, which is used by 170 million Americans, if its Chinese owner ByteDance fails to sell it by January, citing national security concerns.
However, the company is challenging the law in court, and has said that TikTok does not share US user data with the Chinese government and has taken extensive steps to protect user privacy.
