The White House said this week that sanctioning the organization would not be “the right approach,” even though U.S. President Joe Biden had previously called the ICC’s request for warrants against Israeli leaders “outrageous.”

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had said that Washington was open to working with Congress to find a response to the announcement by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

In an interview published Tuesday, Benjamin Netanyahu said that “the United States said that they would support… the sanctions bill.”

“I thought that was still the American position because there was a bipartisan consensus a few days ago that there would be a sanctions bill against the ICC if they persist in these warrants,” he added.

“Now it seems that there’s a question mark, and frankly, I’m surprised and disappointed,” he said.

Prosecutor Karim Khan has requested that arrest warrants be issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Israel’s prime minister accused the ICC’s chief prosecutor of “completely distorting reality” by putting Israeli forces on a par with “the Hamas monsters” in seeking arrest warrants for both.

Hamas has reacted to the prosecutor’s move by saying that he is “equating the victim with the executioner.”
