Counting of votes for India's general elections begins

India's Election Commission has begun counting votes in the general election for the 543-seat lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha, which was contested by some 650 million people over six weeks.

The counting began at 08:00 (03:30 in Lisbon) with the postal ballots, before continuing with the votes in electronic machines in the counting centers located in the middle thousand contested constituencies, according to the Indian Electoral Commission.

This is the only phase of the electoral process to be held simultaneously in this country of almost one billion voters, which required seven phases of voting.
