Cecil Farley, 91, became the first patient in the UK to undergo pioneering surgery to receive an artificial cornea transplant – and it has been a resounding success.

Speaking to Sky News, Cecil said he had been struggling with his eyesight for 15 years and since having the operation his life has been "enriched".

"You don't realise how debilitating it is until it happens to you," he said, adding that he was "overjoyed" to be able to see his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth, again.

"I can still see my wife after 63 years of marriage, we can carry on as normal," he said.

Before the surgery Cecil had no vision in his right eye but since the operation in February, his sight has been gradually improving.

The NHS told Sky News the pioneering surgery could help reduce waiting lists for patients waiting for human corneas.

The artificial cornea - known as the EndoArt - works in a similar way to a contact lens. The medical device, which replaces the inner part of the cornea, is stitched into the eye using a single stitch.

So far, only 200 people worldwide, including Cecil Farley, have received the EndoArt.
