During the same period, 24 Israelis, including eight members of the Israeli security forces, were killed in the West Bank and Israel in clashes or alleged attacks by Palestinians from the West Bank, Türk added in a statement.

The West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, has seen a surge in violence since the start of a war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza on 7 October 2023.

According to the Palestinian authorities, at least 522 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers or settlers since the start of the war.

"As if the tragic events in Israel and Gaza over the past eight months were not enough, the people of the occupied West Bank are also being subjected to a daily toll of bloodshed that has reached unprecedented levels. It is unconscionable that so many lives have been taken in such an arbitrary manner," Türk said.

On 1 June, he said, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager and critically injured another youth near the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp, close to the city of Jericho, adding that the latter died the next day.

"These two fatalities, together with those of four other Palestinians killed by Israeli security forces on Monday, bring the total number of Palestinians killed since 7 October (2023) to 505, according to information assessed by the UN Human Rights Office," he said, calling for accountability.

According to the Palestinian authorities, at least 522 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers or settlers since the start of the war.

"The killings, the destruction and the widespread human rights violations are unacceptable and must stop immediately," the High Commissioner said, urging Israel to "adopt and implement rules of engagement" that fully respect "human rights norms".

The war was triggered by an unprecedented barrage of rockets fired by the Palestinian movement Hamas into Israel on 7 October last year, killing 1,194 people, most of them civilians, according to a France Presse tally based on official Israeli figures.

Of the 251 people taken hostage that day, 120 are still being held in Gaza, 41 of whom have died, according to the Israeli army.

In response, Israel, which aimed to "wipe out Hamas", launched an offensive on the Gaza Strip that has so far left 36,479 dead, according to figures from the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza government.
