Two people died in a shipwreck in Tróia, on sunday. One person was rescued alive, while the search continues on Monday for the two people who are still missing. But what happened and what do we know about the victims?
The accident is said to have happened around 7 am, but the Maritime Police were only alerted at 10:05 am. On board the vessel were two brothers, aged 21 and 23, a father, aged 45, and a son, aged 13, as well as the owner of the boat, a 62-year-old helmsman.
The owner of the vessel was rescued alive "by a vessel that was nearby", informed the National Maritime Authority (AMN), while the means were activated for the search of the four people who remained missing at the time.
Later, the bodies of the child and the 23-year-old were recovered. The body of the minor was detected and recovered by elements of the local command of the Maritime Police of Setúbal, while the body of the other fatal victim "was detected by the aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force, having been recovered by the vessel of the Maritime Police".
The captain of the Port of Setúbal and local commander of the Maritime Police, Serrano Augusto, revealed that the survivor was not related to the other passengers. "They are all from the Grândola area, they live on the same street" and were going cuttlefish fishing, Serrano Augusto also stressed. Only the child was wearing a life jacket.
The owner of the boat later revealed to the authorities that he was "surprised by a blow of the sea" and that when trying to turn, there was a swell that turned the boat over.
The search for the two people who are still missing resumed on Monday morning by land and sea, the spokesman for the Navy and National Maritime Authority informed Notícias ao Minuto. The work at sea includes the patrol ship Viana do Castelo and a lifeboat. On land, teams from the Maritime Police are involved, while drones from the National Maritime Authority are searching the air. On Sunday, a helicopter was also involved, with the search being interrupted at 8:30 pm due to the water temperature and the lack of sunlight.
Asked about the non-use of air resources in the search on Monday, Captain Serrano Augusto explained that "the great effort made in the search is in the first eight hours".
"At this moment, that area has already been swept so many times that the probability of the people not having been seen is very small. The bodies were close to the vessel, which leads us to believe that they did not move very far", he said.
It is also worth recalling that on Sunday, underwater images were released showing the search operations carried out off the coast of Tróia. The divers who carried out searches in the vicinity of the vessel did not detect "anything" inside it, Serrano Augusto also told Notícias ao Minuto.
