Alcochete. Young man identified after seizure of 800kg of Japanese clam
The bivalves will be destroyed. A 22 year old man was identified during a road operation.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) arrested, on Friday, and seized more than 800 kilograms (kg) of Japanese clam (Ruditapes phippinarum), in the municipality of Alcochete, district of Setúbal. According to a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the seizure was made during a road inspection operation, during which the military detected a vehicle "transporting bivalves in an irregular situation". According to the GNR explained in the note, during the investigation a 22-year-old man was identified, as well as "the respective contravention report was drawn up, due to lack of registration document". The authorities also indicate that after the health inspection they will be destroyed. The GNR recalls that the capture, storage and shipment of this type of bivalve, without being subjected to purification or health control, can jeopardize public health, if they are introduced into consumption, due to possible contamination with toxins, and the supporting document of origin is essential to prevent irregular introduction into consumption.
