The non-governmental organization that coordinates the activities of the European Climate Pact in Portugal states in a press release that it will formalize the proposal at the Climate Mural, a 'workshop' on climate change that will take place at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). The proposal, to be presented to the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP) and the Coordinating Council of Polytechnic Higher Institutes (CCISP), concerns a semester course that contributes with ECTS credits [European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System] for the respective undergraduate degrees. "Knowledge about climate change, and access to skills to help students face it, must be incorporated into the curriculum of higher education institutions," says Rita Prates, from Zero, quoted in the press release. The environmental association notes that "IST, which is part of the University of Lisbon, already offers all students a course with the desired characteristics" and called "Climate Crisis and Just Transition", taught by Tiago Domingos, professor of Environment and Energy in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. According to the professor, for a course like his to exist in all higher education institutions, "a teacher training program and an additional funding line for this purpose would be desirable", the statement said. Tiago Domingos believes that "the Environmental Fund of the Ministry of the Environment is a natural instrument to finance this means of transmitting, directly and indirectly, skills to the whole society to deal with the climate crisis". An initiative of the European Green Deal, promoted by the European Union, the European Climate Pact aims to "mobilize communities in Europe for investments, activities and processes that are progressively less dependent on fossil fuels and the emission of other greenhouse gases, promoting the transition of their lifestyles and their production processes to a sustainable economy".
