At a press conference at the consulate-general in Lisbon to present the new Brazilian passport booklet to journalists, Ambassador Wladimir Valler Filho admitted that in May, the consulate will be prepared to issue the new document on a large scale.
If all goes well, the Lisbon consulate will be followed by the Brazilian consulates in Porto and Faro, he said. "This is the first post that will issue the new passport booklet," said the Brazilian diplomatic official in statements to journalists. In Ambassador Wladimir Valler Filho's opinion, the choice of the Lisbon consulate to be the pioneer in issuing the new passport is related to the size of this representation and its experience in terms of workload. "As we are a large post with a lot of work experience, due to the number of appointments we have, it is always a reference post for starting certain practices and innovations, because in this way, we can also provide an immediate overview and respond quickly," stressed the diplomat. According to the consul-general, the consulate has already entered the testing phase, "together with Itamaraty, in Brasília, because the new passport has modern security technologies", and after this phase is completed, it will start issuing the document "on a large scale", admitting that this will happen during the month of May. The consul warned that the new passport is only intended for those who need to renew that document because the old one has expired, so those who have a valid passport do not need to make a new document. As for the issuing prices, the 132 euros for an adult remain unchanged, the ambassador assured. The new document is valid for ten years and, according to Wladimir Valler Filho, offers greater security and makes any attempt at forgery more difficult. Since October 2023, Brazilians have started to receive the new passport model. In the new document, the coat of arms is smaller than that of the 2019 passport and the pages have figures representing the flora, fauna and culture of all regions of the country, but also the names of the Brazilian biomes: Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Caatinga, Amazónia, Pantanal and Pampas. In addition, the passport holder's photo appears in three versions, one of which is made up of letters and numbers of the person's biometric data. The passport will also have the CPF (Individual Taxpayer Registry) number. The information is protected by a holographic security laminate. According to statements by the Federal Police at the time of the document's launch in Brazil, it is more secure against fraud. At today's press conference, the consul-general in Lisbon also announced the implementation of a new security system at that consular post, which he showed to journalists. "At the entrance, there will be an electronic portal and that control conveyor belt," he said. Thus, before entering the consulate's services, users will go through the so-called "x-ray".
