The Social Democratic Party (PSD) deputies Luís Newton, Carlos Eduardo Reis and Margarida Saavedra were the target of a request to lift parliamentary immunity by the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) within the scope of the Tutti-Frutti process, advances CNN Portugal.

All will be constituted as defendants, according to the document signed by Judge Jorge de Melo, which arrived at the Assembly of the Republic.

According to the channel, the request was submitted to Parliament on April 18, where it will now be analyzed by the Transparency and Statute of Deputies Committee.

The crimes for which the deputies are strongly indicted relate to the Tutti-Frutti process, which has been ongoing since 2016, and which investigates alleged schemes of a central bloc of interests between PS and PSD to negotiate political positions in the parishes and municipalities of Lisbon, through agreements and public contracts, with suspicions of passive corruption, influence peddling, economic participation in business and prohibited financing.

Luís Newton, Margarida Saavedra and Carlos Eduardo Reis were elected to Parliament less than a month ago, following the last legislative elections on March 10.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP), Newton is suspected of crimes of passive corruption and prevarication, Saavedra is "strongly indicted" for the crime of qualified fraud and Carlos Eduardo Reis is indicted for crimes of corruption, influence peddling and prevarication.

In all cases, according to the same document, the MP "understands that it is important for the investigation to take statements" from the deputies "as defendants".

The law that regulates the statutes of deputies shows that those elected to Parliament cannot be heard as defendants without authorization from the Assembly of the Republic. However, this is mandatory when there are strong indications of the practice of a willful crime.

CNN Portugal also reports that other defendants in this process are being called to the MP to be constituted as defendants.
