Hundreds of citizens visited the Palácio de Belém this afternoon, open to the public between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm as part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of April 25th.
At around 4:20 pm, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa opened the doors of the official office, where he was sitting at the desk organizing and signing documents, then exchanging a few words with the dozens of citizens who filled the room. The Head of State explained the history of the rooms and gardens of the Palácio de Belém, also pointing out various pieces of furniture in the office, including the sofa where he usually receives guests in audiences and where, according to him, heads of state such as Xi Jinping, Barack Obama or Vladimir Putin have already sat. To his left, he showed a table where the President of the Republic usually meets weekly with the Prime Minister, stressing that, before the former Head of State Aníbal Cavaco Silva, these meetings used to be held on the sofa. "It was an idea of President Cavaco [that the meetings move to the table] for a very simple reason: when he was Prime Minister, President Mário Soares was in office, but he brought huge files, and either put them [away] on the table or on his lap, which wasn't very functional. And, when he arrived, he had this table put here," he said. In these brief words that he exchanged with citizens, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa did not want to answer journalists, stressing that today he made a 26-minute speech at the solemn session of April 25th, in parliament, which he said was his longest speech on the day of the Revolution. However, when asked if, next year, he would agree to participate in the popular parade on Avenida da Liberdade, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied that, this year, it "was impossible" due to his schedule, with the heads of state of the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP) being present in Lisbon. "I have one year left, which is next year," he said. Asked if, next year, he intends to go down Avenida da Liberdade, he replied: "I don't know. I don't know, first, if I'm alive. If I'm alive, if I'm healthy and, thirdly, what my schedule is." "This year had to be special because of decolonization, so it was more open and more complete than usual. I don't know what next year will be like," he said. Then, the President of the Republic asked several children who were in the room to approach his desk, having taken a picture, and several 'selfies' with people present in the room.
