In information sent to the Lusa agency today, the GNR stated that in the operation, called "Clean Water", which began on 15 December 2023 and ended on 15 April, around 50 inspections were carried out, with 26 violations detected in the water domain, resulting in the preparation of several administrative offence reports.

Among the reports, the GNR highlighted 16 for the rejection of degraded water into the soil/water without any mechanism to ensure its purification, two for non-compliance with the spreading of livestock effluent on flooded soil and two more for lack of a water resource use title.

"Within the scope of these violations, 11 individuals and 15 legal entities were also identified", stated the GNR.

A source from the GNR clarified that most of the 26 violations were recorded in the municipality of Leiria.

According to the GNR, this operation aimed to address the numerous complaints, recorded in recent years, alluding to the pollution of water resources, in order to promote the sustainability of the biodiversity of these resources, providing monitoring and identification of perpetrators of illegal acts, which endanger the water bodies of these municipalities.

The GNR also stated that, through the Nature and Environment Protection Service, "it is aware of this scourge, guaranteeing regular patrolling of the most affected area", adding that, to report violations or clarify doubts, citizens can use the SOS Environment and Territory Line (808200520).

When it announced this operation, the GNR announced that "daily and uninterrupted monitoring actions would be carried out on the Lis river basin in the municipalities of Leiria, Marinha Grande, Batalha and Porto de Mós, in order to address the direct and indirect discharges of effluents from the manufacturing industry, as well as from agricultural and livestock activities, which are quite representative in the region".

"Many of the watercourses in the Lis river basin have their banks with very dense vegetation, thus preventing inspection and verification of the conditions of the riverbed throughout its length, which is why the patrolling model inside the water resources has been adopted, which has proven effective in detecting illegal acts of this nature", clarified the GNR.
