Vulture attacks leave producers apprehensive in the International Douro
An alleged vulture attack that occurred today in Bemposta, in the municipality of Mogadouro, left a livestock producer apprehensive who, in addition to the damage caused, mentions the increasingly frequent proximity of these birds to the populations.

"I have had the cows grazing on a plot of land located in the village of Bemposta for over a week, on a meadow in Bemposta, where there are houses on one side and the other. Early in the morning I went to see the cattle and everything was calm and I went to work the land. Later I came back and saw the vultures pecking at a newborn calf, which ended up dying", José Augusto Morais explained to Lusa.
According to this producer, the vultures left the site very quickly, which did not allow for the flock of these scavenging birds to be photographed, "but the loss remains".
"I was surprised by the way the alleged attack was carried out and so close to the houses. In conversation, I am becoming aware of more cases, such as what happened a few days ago in a neighbouring location, where the animal had to be treated to prevent its death", he explained.
In a space of just over two weeks, this is the second alleged attack of this kind attributed to vultures, with the first having occurred on 8 April in the town of Vilar do Rei.
"It was a heifer that had been in labour. After giving birth, the calf suckled and everything seemed to be going well. After the effort of giving birth, the mother lay down and it was at that moment that the flock of vultures attacked and fatally wounded the animal", the owner Paulo Vilariça explained at the time.
This is not the first time that these scavenging birds have attacked the land of these two owners, with other records in both locations.
The producers of the Douro International Natural Park (PNDI) do not doubt that this type of attack is increasingly frequent, with there sometimes being discrepancies between the authorities and the owners in the way the event and its origin are approached.
"I cannot do anything about this matter, I am just left with the loss", stressed José Augusto Morais.
Contacted by Lusa, the Mayor of Mogadouro, António Pimentel, who is also the chairman of the PNDI Co-management Commission, said that "the owners will have to be compensated for the alleged losses and that he will raise the issue at the next meeting of the co-management commission, on 7 May".
Lusa tried to contact the ICNF, but without success.
According to specialists in rupicolous avifauna, the vulture - also known as the griffon vulture - which regularly nests in Portugal, with an incidence in the PNDI and the Tejo Internacional, has the status of "near threatened species".
