In a post on the official account on the social network X (formerly Twitter), to mark May 1st, Luís Montenegro wrote that "public policies must serve to improve employment in a more productive and socially responsible country, with fewer taxes and more income".

"Today we celebrate with all workers: those who produce, create and contribute to a modern and ambitious Portugal", added the head of government, wishing a "happy Workers' Day".

Workers' Day is celebrated today throughout the country, with the union headquarters CGTP and UGT promoting demonstrations and initiatives to value workers.

May 1st, International Workers' Day, originated from the events in Chicago 137 years ago, when a day of struggle was held to reduce the working day to eight hours, which was violently repressed by the authorities of the United States of America, who killed dozens of workers and sentenced four union leaders to death.

50 years ago, in Portugal, the celebration of May 1st, just one week after the April 25th revolution, was a large popular demonstration.

Throughout the country, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets showing their joy and with demands such as 'right to strike', 'end the war now' or 'return of the soldiers', according to the photographs of the time.

In Lisbon, it is estimated that 500,000 people were at the Workers' Day demonstration in 1974.
