"In Portugal there is the right to demonstrate. We sent a warning [to the Lisbon City Council], just like last weekend, when the police arrested two people," said to Lusa Alice Gato, 22, spokesperson for the protest that is taking place today in Lisbon.

So far, the protest is taking place without incident, apart from the restrictions on road traffic.

The protest, which started at 9 am, is being carried out by two dozen activists and is causing traffic jams in the direction between the airport and Areeiro.

The lane reserved for public transport is not occupied by the Climáximo protesters, allowing vehicles to pass.

"We are holding these protests because the lives of all of us are at risk. Governments and companies are condemning thousands of people to death every year. We cannot trivialise the facts related to the climate crisis," justified Alice Gato, reiterating the concerns of the group.

This is the organisation's sixth protest in Lisbon since 26 April.

"While governments, companies and the 'ultra-wealthy' have the right to condemn millions of people to death, people are prevented from fighting against destruction," laments the activist.

"We are in the hottest year with the highest emissions since records began. Governments and companies know that they are condemning thousands of people to death and they show that they will not stop, as demonstrated by the government's plans to build a new airport, or Galp's interest in exploring oil in Namibia," she insisted.

For Climáximo, "society must stop the destruction and implement the disarmament and peace plan necessary to ensure the lives of all people, putting life above profit".

According to a pamphlet that is being distributed to motorists who are slowly passing by the protesters' go-slow, the group recalls that "11 supporters went to court for blocking traffic so that society could resist against the war declared by governments and companies against society and the planet".
