Vila Pouca de Aguiar celebrates the 1st municipal holiday on May 16th
The Municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, in the district of Vila Real, will celebrate the municipal holiday for the first time on May 16, which until now was celebrated on June 22, the president told Lusa today.

The change of the municipal holiday from June 22 to May 16 was approved in the Municipal Assembly of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, on September 29, 2023, based on the Manueline Charter of Aguiar da Pena of May 16, 1517, said Ana Rita Dias.
Despite the attribution of old charters (the first charter was attributed by D. Afonso Henriques and later confirmed by D. Afonso II in February 1,220), the day of the granting of the new charter took place on May 16, 1517, hence the change in the date of the holiday, she explained.
"The official document that consolidates municipalism comes with the reform of the charters and in which D. Manuel grants the charter to Aguiar de Pena on May 16, 1517", she stressed.
Ana Rita Dias also added that the population, in general, accepted this change well, also because the reason for the municipal holiday is "a reason that concerns everyone".
According to the mayor, the first municipal holiday celebrated on May 16 will be marked, from 10:00 am, with a guard of honor with the raising of the flag in Praça Luís de Camões, municipal decorations, dance demonstration and musical moment.
This solemn session will also include, during the afternoon, the practice of different sports modalities in the municipal complex, she added.
However, the celebration of this first municipal holiday will go beyond May 16 with the exhibition, throughout the week, of an exhibition in the municipal library on the attribution of the charter, the holding of an ethnographic procession and a cultural evening.
