The Portuguese Army provided resources and several soldiers to support local authorities following the fire that broke out on Saturday morning at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, the Army spokesperson revealed to Notícias ao Minuto.

"The Army provided an ambulance and four Iveco medical vehicles and 15 soldiers to support local authorities", the entity explained.

The soldiers assigned to this operation have already carried out "the transport of 39 beds, seven hospital trolleys and various hospital equipment to USISM (Unidade de Saúde da Ilha de São Miguel)".

It should be recalled that the fire affected a sector of the Ponta Delgada Hospital, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores.

The alert was given at 9:40 am local time (10:40 am in Lisbon) and was considered contained at 2:50 pm local time (3:50 pm in Lisbon), a hospital source told the Lusa agency.

According to the source, "all critical patients from the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES) [were] transferred to the emergency department of the CUF/Açores Hospital and non-critical patients to the emergency departments of several health centres on the island [of São Miguel]".

The HDES did not count how many patients were removed from the hospital unit due to the fire, indicating that some inpatients were also "discharged early".

The fire forced the closure of the Emergency Department, Delivery Room and Operating Room and affected the electrical system of the largest health unit in the Azores.

Meanwhile, the regional secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, revealed at a press conference that "there are no victims and at the moment there is no one in any danger of life".
