The fire that broke out this morning at the Ponta Delgada Hospital, in the Azores, was declared "extinguished" at 4:11 pm. As a result of the incident, nine firefighters were injured and more than 200 patients had to be transferred to other local health units.
The president of the Regional Civil Protection Service revealed that the fire was declared "extinguished" at 4:11 pm (5:11 pm in Lisbon), this Saturday, then entering the cooling down phase, after a "complex operation".
"We regret that nine firefighters suffered minor injuries - burns and smoke inhalation, but the situation is now under control", said Rui Andrade in statements to journalists.
In addition, "more than 200 patients were, throughout this afternoon, transferred to other health units", with just over two dozen patients still to be evacuated.
The official also noted that "the origin" of the fire is yet to be determined and will be investigated by the competent authorities.
"At this time it is completely premature, and I am not the right person to answer about the origin. What I can say is that the fire apparently broke out in a technical area intended for the hospital's energy transformation stations", he pointed out.
Critical and serious patients were transferred to the CUF hospital, in the city of Lagoa, and the rest to health centres.
The regional secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, had also made some statements to journalists, pointing out that "no one was in danger of dying". At a press conference in Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, the regional secretary explained that the fire had compromised "the hospital's energy supply" and that "the smoke had spread to several areas" of the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, on the island of São Miguel.
The fire that broke out today at the Ponta Delgada Hospital forced the closure of the Emergency Department, Delivery Unit and Operating Theatre, the evacuation of patients and affected the electrical system of the largest health unit in the Azores.
