Union in solidarity with the situation experienced at the Ponta Delgada hospital
The Independent Union of Healthcare Technicians (SITAS) expressed its solidarity today with the dramatic situation experienced at the Ponta Delgada Hospital in the Azores due to a fire, and highlighted the exemplary manner in which patients were assisted and evacuated.

In a press release signed by the head of SITAS/Açores, João Mota, the union sends "all its solidarity" to all the auxiliary health technicians of the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES), the largest health unit in the Azores, and to all health professionals for the dramatic situation they went through today.
SITAS highlighted the "unity among all auxiliary health technicians" who, "in a remarkable and exemplary way", helped the patients and the "total evacuation of the HDES, ensuring safety throughout the evacuation process, swiftly".
Following the fire, whose first alert was given at 09:40 local time (10:40 in Lisbon), the HDES emergency room had to be closed and the hospital was evacuated.
The patients who were in the delivery room, in neonatology, in pediatrics, in the emergency room and in the intensive care unit were transferred to the CUF hospital in Lagoa, in São Miguel, the hospital's Board of Directors president, Manuela Menezes, told journalists.
Patients were also transferred to health centers, to the Casa de Saúde de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and to the Clínica do Bom Jesus, she added.
With the help of the Army, equipment was transported both to the CUF unit and to the health centers.
The fire was declared extinguished at 16:11 local time (17:11 in Lisbon), having caused minor injuries to nine of the 104 firefighters mobilized, Civil Protection revealed today.
