Porto City Hall launches campaign to help the city of Porto Alegre
Porto City Council will launch a support and fundraising campaign for the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, which is being hit by heavy flooding, it was revealed today.

Speaking to Lusa, a source from the local authority clarified that the campaign aims to "show solidarity" with the city in the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul and the south of Santa Catarina.
According to the Mayor of Porto, the independent Rui Moreira, the floods that are ravaging the Brazilian state "should be a cause for concern".
"When I called the Mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo, to express the solidarity of the city of Porto, he asked me to publicise the support and fundraising campaign," he said, quoted in a note sent to Lusa, appealing to everyone to help the "brotherly people".
The torrential rains have already caused more than 50 deaths and dozens of people are missing in southern Brazil.
Brazil's Civil Protection reported that 281 municipalities have been affected by the rains, 8,296 people have been displaced and 74 have been injured. The total number of people affected is almost 400,000, according to the newspaper "Folha de São Paulo".
In the early hours of Friday, the Guaíba River in Porto Alegre reached 4.23 metres, the highest level since 1941.
In the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre and in the south of the state of Santa Catarina, "the probability of flooding is very high", according to the authorities.
As for landslides due to the rains, the risk is "very high" in Porto Alegre, in the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul and in the south of Santa Catarina.
The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, explained that the security forces have rescued a total of 8,000 people.
