In a press conference in Praia, after a meeting with his Cape Verdean counterpart, within the scope of a visit he is making to the archipelago, the president of the STJ said that the manifest is a position taken "normal in a democracy", which he respects.
He stressed that he has left "no doubt" about the "need" to carry out a reform in Justice in Portugal, "which can be more or less profound, depending on the will of the political power".
"But a reform is needed in some areas (...), the reform of Justice is essential, something must be done in some aspects", he reinforced, showing "total availability" to participate in the debate with the representatives of the legislative and executive powers and with the other partners linked to the administration of the sector.
A group of 50 personalities from different quadrants made an appeal last week to the President of the Republic, the Government and the parliament so that initiatives are taken that, respecting the independence of the courts, the autonomy of the Public Prosecution Service and the guarantees of judicial defence, the "bottlenecks and dysfunctions that have long undermined its effectiveness and its public legitimacy" are resolved.
Entitled "For a reform of justice - in Defence of the Democratic State of Law", the signatories of the manifest express "civic shock" with a view to establishing the reform of justice as a priority and criticize the investigative actions of the Public Prosecution Service.
The group draws attention, among other aspects, to the "feeling of impunity" that the ineffectiveness of the system conveys to society, the deficit of internal and external evaluation, the interference in political power or the recurrent breaches of judicial secrecy.
The petition is signed, among others, by the former presidents of parliament Augusto Santos Silva, Ferro Rodrigues and Mota Amaral, the former leaders of the PSD and the CDS, Rui Rio and Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, the former ministers Leonor Beleza, David Justino, Fernando Negrão, António Vitorino, José Vieira da Silva, António Barreto, Correia de Campos, Alberto Costa, Pinto Ribeiro, Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues and the former president of the Constitutional Court João Caupers.
