The Independent Union of Doctors (SIM) criticized, this Monday, the state of obstetrics emergencies in the country, mainly in the Lisbon area and the South bank.
"During this weekend, the São Bernardo Hospital in Setúbal was the only maternity of the NHS open on the South bank. On Saturday, with only one doctor, it also had to close", began by regretting the union structure, in a statement sent to the newsrooms.
In the missive, SIM also revealed that "during the night of Sunday, due to the excessive influx, [the São Bernardo Hospital] ran out of capacity to admit anyone else".
"It was therefore communicated to INEM that it also had to close once again. Women everywhere. Some already puerperal and others in labor. INEM informs that all NHS hospitals in Lisbon were also already closed. Only the São Francisco Xavier Hospital could receive someone punctually, after contact. Besides this one, only Santarém would still have vacancies", continued to explain the doctors' union.
For SIM, "working in these circumstances is the current reality", and "the risk is enormous".
"Is anyone surprised that doctors are leaving the NHS? Subjecting doctors and pregnant women to such a reality is a serious negligence of the State. And we are not on vacation. What will it be like in the summer months?", the union also questioned, concluding: "Can anyone endure continuing in this overload regime? A nightmare with no light at the end of the tunnel".
