During the final arguments, which took place in the São João Novo Court, in Porto, the Public Prosecutor considered that the defendant, who is in preventive detention, should be "condemned as an example", emphasizing that the crime took place in a context of domestic violence.
The prosecutor stated that, on the day of the crime, the man entered the workplace of the woman, from whom he was separated, wearing a cap, closed the door, slapped her, causing her to fall, and while she was on the ground, stabbed her and kicked her in the head, before fleeing the scene.
In addition to this description, the prosecutor stated that a co-worker of the victim heard screams and went to see what was happening, and the defendant told him to leave the scene while pointing the knife at him.
For this reason, the prosecutor understood that the man acted "with premeditation, reflection and without any hesitation".
Saying that the defendant "behaved with absolute coldness", the prosecutor stressed that the woman was defenseless and, in addition, prevented her from being assisted by her co-worker.
The prosecutor also said he did not believe the version presented in the trial hearing by the defendant that he only wanted to injure her with the knife and not kill her because the blow was "deep and fatal", which invalidates this theory.
On the other hand, the lawyer for the family of the victim, who was 43 years old at the time of the crime, understood that a sentence "starting at 15 years is too little" because the parents and the daughter saw their daughter and mother, respectively, "being killed brutally", being a suffering that cannot be forgotten.
The lawyer stated that situations of domestic violence only end if the aggressors are condemned as an example, insisting that it is a "perverse and highly reprehensible" crime.
Despite assuming that the crime of homicide is "very serious", the defendant's lawyer reinforced that the man's intention, who was 47 years old at the time, was not to kill the woman, having "had the misfortune" of the blow hitting a critical point.
In addition, the defense attorney highlighted the fact that the suspect works in prison, receives visits from his three children -- one of whom is a minor and the result of the relationship with the victim -- and shows remorse.
In the end, and before returning to the prison, the defendant apologized in tears to his children, namely to his minor daughter, and to the family of the woman who was in the courtroom attending the trial.
