"I know, and this even shocks me, that the Board of the Santa Casa did not have any benefit for itself and I would like the minister to explain what this benefit was", said Ana Vitória Azevedo, during the hearing at the Parliamentary Committee on Labour, Social Security and Inclusion.

In an interview with RTP, on Tuesday, the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security Maria do Rosário Ramalho stated that most workers at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) earn the minimum wage and that the salaries of the managers are much higher.

"Those of the Board [of the SCML] were even increased, which surprised us. (...) They benefited themselves", criticized the minister.

Before the members of the committee, and trying to "get into the head of the minister", the deputy-ombudsman admitted that the reasoning made by Maria do Rosário Ramalho is based on "the increase that was made to the statute of the public manager", which is the responsibility of the Government and not of the Santa Casa.

"The remunerations of the Santa Casa are directly indexed to the statute of the public manager. But what benefit?", she questioned, pointing out that if this was the minister's reasoning, this is the explanation.
