"We have a very aged staff and it was important that there could be a reserve situation or early retirement, which would allow firefighters to benefit from this situation, in the same way that happens with the security forces", said the president of the ANBP, Fernando Curto, who met with the Secretary of State for Local Administration and Land Use Planning.

The "current reality is very worrying" and without the entry of new professional firefighters, there is "some deficiency in the provision of relief".

The leader defends the equating of professional firefighters with security forces, recalling that there are specific "rights and benefits" of the function.

Professional firefighters are a special career in the civil service but, compared to the security forces, they have fewer salary rights, working conditions and retirement.

According to the ANBP, it will only be possible to rejuvenate the corporations and complete the deficit staff with the departure of professionals and the progression of the career.

"The chambers are our employers", but it is "necessary for the Government to create legislation" to allow career progression and promote the possibility of the departure of the oldest staff.

At the meeting, the professional firefighters asked for a new commitment to vocational training, using the resources of the Lisbon Fire Brigade Regiment school to serve the entire country.

"For this, it is necessary for the Government to create legislation that allows the chambers [with professional firefighters] to benefit from this added value", he explained.

On the other hand, the president of the ANBP addressed with the Secretary of State for Local Administration the possibility of creating a single guardianship of the sector.

We have "a local guardianship because of the municipal councils, we have another guardianship of the public administration because we are civil servants and another of civil protection". Now, "all this should be standardized so that it would be easier to unblock all these situations", explained the leader.

At the meeting, the Secretary of State for Local Administration and Land Use Planning, Hernâni Dias, "took note of our requests and pending situations", so the ANBP expects new future meetings with the executive.
