The Episcopal Commission for Christian Education and Doctrine of the Faith (CEECDF) today expressed the wish that parents, "as the first educators" of their children, may choose the school they understand, "without financial or other obstacles".

In a message about the 25th anniversary of the Portuguese Association of Catholic Schools (APEC), which will be celebrated on Thursday, the bishops who are part of the Commission consider that, in a "not always favourable scenario", it is fundamental for the Catholic school to "live intensely its identity and mission and adapt it to a changing world, mostly secularized and with many challenges".
"It is necessary to promote the harmonious articulation of all the educational actors of the Catholic school, in interaction with the ecclesial reality, but also with the surrounding social reality and -- without forgetting the determining responsibility of the State, in terms of freedom and subsidiarity -- the political reality, in the construction of the Global Educational Pact, which Pope Francis has insistently (...) talked about", defend the bishops in the text released today.
The message highlights, on the other hand, the "good that APEC has done during this quarter of a century: as an ecclesial reality in the path of evangelization and in the promotion of the identity and mission of Catholic schools; in the stimulus for communion, sharing and cooperation, generator of synergies; in the promotion of freedom of education, so that schools, because they are 'Catholic', are open to all, privileging the most fragile".
The role of the association is also underlined "in the collaboration with families in the construction of the educational project they want for their children; to the educational system and to the school network, filling gaps and affirming a peculiar, irreplaceable and so expressively sought-after brand".
Within the scope of the commemorations of the 25 years of APEC, the association, together with the National Secretariat of Christian Education (SNEC), will hold the 2nd National Congress of the Catholic School in Fátima, on October 10th and 11th.
APEC represents 127 educational establishments, with approximately 70 thousand students, 5,500 teachers and 3,500 non-teaching staff.
