"That is why I have repeatedly said that it is fortunate if he can continue to live this issue intensely at a European level", said the Head of State, before António Costa, at the presentation of the book 'The Year Zero of the New Europe', by Bernardo Pires de Lima, at the Belém Cultural Centre, in Lisbon.
It was up to the former Prime Minister to present the new book by Bernardo Pires de Lima, a researcher in international relations and consultant to the Civil House of the President of the Republic, but Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took the floor before the session ended to thank "this unique late afternoon moment" with "two exceptional personalities".
Regarding the author, Bernardo Pires de Lima, the President of the Republic defined him as a "forecaster of destinies" and left a prediction: "There will be a day when history, in the executive plan, crosses paths with him, there will be a day. Until then, he speaks to executives and non-executives, anticipating what they do not understand and will understand".
In relation to the former Prime Minister, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praised his "European protagonism", which he said he had witnessed, "anticipating ideals, anticipating problems, anticipating risks, anticipating solutions" within the framework of the European Union.
António Costa is a "passionate about Europe -- not that he was less passionate about Portugal, but passionate about Europe", he considered.
The Head of State came to the defence of the former Prime Minister regarding the enlargement of the European Union: "The great simplistic debate was: so is Portugal against enlargement? No, Portugal defends the preparation of the European Union for enlargement, knowing that it is different from the previous ones and much, much, much more complicated".
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at an informal meeting of the European Heads of State of the Arraiolos Group, it was visible how in this matter "each one had their own path, and convergence between the various paths was not easy".
This time, the President of the Republic did not refer specifically to the possibility of António Costa presiding over the European Council, but reiterated that he hopes that he can "continue to live this issue intensely at a European level".
