"I intend to ultimately hand over the Armed Forces in a better state than we received them and this implies deciding on a set of advantages from the point of view of dignifying, better pay conditions, materialized in many other aspects that make a military career attractive", considered Nuno Melo.

The Defense Minister of the PSD/CDS-PP minority Government was heard today in the parliamentary Defense commission, at the request of Chega and IL, about his statements on mandatory military service as an alternative punishment for young people who commit minor crimes, a measure that Nuno Melo has since denied proposing, a thesis which he insisted on today.

In response to Chega, Nuno Melo stated that "there is a set of very important measures that the Ministry of Defense has on the table and is working on regarding multiple aspects that will first be discussed with the military chiefs and then brought here", stating that "this applies to the salary component and the different supplements".

To deputy João Almeida, from CDS-PP, Nuno Melo stressed that, with him, "the military chiefs will always be part of the discussion", with him being responsible for "the political part taking into account the budgetary circumstances".

"I want to give you a guarantee: for this government and for this minister, the Armed Forces are not the children of a lesser God and, therefore, for this government the Armed Forces and the resolution of their problems are to be treated with all dignity, subject to political measures that will help to overcome, as much as possible, the difficult circumstances that have been identified", he stressed.

At the beginning of the hearing, the Defense Minister had already stated that the problems in the ranks "have been identified", namely the deficit in personnel, pointing out that the previous socialist executive left the country with 23,230 soldiers "far from the 32,000 that was the commitment made and the 30,000 considered indispensable".

Nuno Melo guaranteed that for this government "the Armed Forces are a first-line political option" and that the executive has "as a priority to invest" in the ranks and "dignify them", as well as war veterans.
