"Unity and diversity". Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa marks Europe Day
Within the scope of this day, the President of the Republic appeals to all citizens to exercise their "right to vote on the next 9th of June" or, alternatively, "in advance, on the 2nd of June".

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, marked Europe Day this Thursday, commemorating the "unity, diversity and space of peace and democracy" that is the European Union (EU).
In this commemoration, Marcelo stressed that "we must look with pride at what we have achieved since the Schuman Declaration, on May 9, 1950, which laid the foundations for the construction of the European Union that we know today and that has brought us prosperity, security, social justice, solidarity, rights and freedoms, the free movement that has allowed so many thousands of young people to travel and study in several countries", we can read in a statement released on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
Europe is now going through "a particularly critical period" in its history, following "an unjust war" by Russia against Ukraine and the "worsening and resurgence of conflicts", as happened in the Middle East.
The note also highlights other difficulties that the EU is facing, such as the fight against climate change and "the emergence of populism, hatred and intolerance". This last issue "calls us to redouble our commitment to defending and promoting the fundamental values of human dignity, equality, the rule of law, pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance and respect for Human Rights".
Regarding the European elections, which will take place exactly one month from today, on June 9, in which European citizens are called to the polls "to choose the MEPs who will represent us for the next five years", Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that it is "a decisive moment for the future of the European Union", with "a new legislative cycle".
With the "deep conviction that together, united in diversity, we count more than alone" and that "Europe is decisive for our stability and prosperity", Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also appeals to everyone to "exercise their right to vote on June 9" or, alternatively, "in advance, on June 2".
