A 24-year-old Portuguese man was arrested in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, on suspicion of trying to kill his 62-year-old father, with whom he lived.
According to the Masslive newspaper, the suspect, identified as Igor Barbosa, allegedly stabbed his father in the house where they lived, between "six and ten times" in the hands, back and legs, leaving him in critical condition.
The authorities received numerous calls via the medical emergency number, reporting that a man was chasing another with a knife.
When they arrived at the scene, Igor was at home. In his hands he was holding a knife with traces of blood.
According to police documents, the suspect ignored the police orders to drop the weapon and started to walk "in circles", until the officers immobilised him.
When he was taken to hospital, due to his emotional state, Igor said, in Portuguese: "God told me to do it".
On Wednesday, the Portuguese man appeared before a judge, for the first judicial interrogation. The magistrate responsible for the case determined that the young man had to be assessed in a psychiatric hospital before being tried, but nevertheless charged him with various types of crime, including attempted murder.
The victim is still hospitalised, but recovering.
