"People should not see the Armed Forces as an expense, but as an attractive career that can also generate goods and services through profitable investments", defended Nuno Melo, who was speaking at the conference "Europe, what future?", which is part of the cycle of "RTP/Civil Society Conferences" and is taking place today at the Centro Cultural de Belém, marking Europe Day.

The Minister of National Defence was speaking on a panel that also included the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMGFA), General Nunes da Fonseca, the director of the Portuguese Institute of International Relations of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IPRI) and former Secretary of State for Defence, Ana Santos Pinto, and the founder of the technology company Tekever, Ricardo Mendes.

Nuno Melo stressed that "the military industry can be highly profitable" and said that this sector is one of the priorities of the PSD/CDS-PP minority government.

"No one wants war, but if there is war, at least it should be faced with the best technology", said the minister, who also pointed out that innovation in the military field can also be used in peace scenarios.

Nuno Melo stressed that talking about defence industries is "certainly talking about satellites, drones and munitions, but also about textiles, clothing and footwear", recalling that the Armed Forces use uniforms made of fabrics developed in a technology centre in Vila Nova de Famalicão (CITEVE).

"[This centre] develops materials, tests resistance and behaviour in different scenarios. And we are very good at that. Portugal can lead coalitions in what we do better than others", he said.

At the beginning of the panel, the Defence Minister was asked if he was willing to die for his country: "I would die, without much hesitation, it is supposed", he replied.

Asked if he would send his sons to war, Nuno Melo said that he "would do everything" to prevent this from happening, "but taking into account that this option is usually taken in adulthood, the option would necessarily be individual".

"I don't think any father would like to see a son in war. As a minister, I will do everything I can at our level so that we do not have to live this tragedy that many of our parents and grandparents unfortunately had to live", he said.
