In statements to the Lusa agency, after a visit to the Ponta Delgada Health Centre, the chairman of the Portuguese Medical Association, Carlos Cortes, said it is "important to create a support network" to help the Regional Health Service (SRS).

"The Portuguese Medical Association has resources, the Portuguese Medical Association has a network, the Portuguese Medical Association has contacts. We will offer everything we can offer. I came here to present all the support of the Portuguese Medical Association in whatever is needed", said Carlos Cortes.

The head of the Portuguese Medical Association, who will have a meeting with the Government of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) on Friday, praised the "response capacity" of the professionals and considered that the health units on the island were "very well organised" after the fire in the largest hospital in the archipelago, on the island of São Miguel.

"I was pleasantly surprised by the enormous response capacity that the health professionals had, as well as the board of directors and the crisis office that was created", he pointed out.

Carlos Cortes confessed to being "moved" by the example of the Ponta Delgada Health Centre, which, "not being a place to hospitalise patients", managed to "organise itself to provide comfort and humanisation to the patients".

"In an area of hospitalisation more linked to surgery, the patients had been removed from their beds and placed in front of the windows to see the daylight and the outside space. I found it curious that in the midst of the crisis people still remembered these things, which may seem insignificant, but for people who are fragile they are signs of humanisation", he stressed.

A fire, which broke out in the Ponta Delgada hospital at 9:40 am local time on Saturday (10:40 am in Lisbon) and was only declared extinguished at 4:11 pm, forced the transfer of all patients who were hospitalised.

At the time of the fire, there were 333 patients in the health establishment and it was necessary to transfer 240.

On Sunday, the Government of the Azores declared a state of public calamity due to the fire to "accelerate procedures" that will allow the activity of the largest Azorean health unit to return to normal in a "short space of time".

An assessment of the damage caused by the fire has not yet been released.
