Proposal for changing the name of the provider of the services recipients
The Ombudsman, Maria Lúcia Amaral, proposed today that the provider for Service Recipients be given the title of Associative Provider, considering it to be a "briefer and less harsh" form.

"The name given to him by the law is the provider of Service Recipients, but I propose that we call him in a shorter and perhaps less harsh way, simply as an Associative provider", said Maria Lúcia Amaral in the 1st Forum of Professional Orders, which takes place in the Noble Hall of the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon.
"In the 2013 law that the new legal regime came to change, the possibility was already foreseen for each professional public association, for each order, to appoint an independent personality -- the then-called provider of service recipients -, with the function of, and I quote, defending the interests of the latter, the service recipients", she highlighted.
According to Maria Lúcia Amaral, ten years later, the new law "came to transform what was previously a faculty, a possibility, into an obligation, a duty that must be fulfilled", affirming that each order "must henceforth have a provider in its organic framework".
"The regime is this. Firstly, the provider must be an independent personality, not registered in the order. Secondly, he is appointed by the president of the bar association, upon proposal by the supervisory body. Thirdly, he performs a paid function. Fourthly, he can only be dismissed if he commits a serious offence. Fifthly, he is part, by nature, of the supervisory body, but without the right to vote", she explained.
