In statements to the Lusa agency, the leader of the Portuguese Nurses Union (SEP) Guadalupe Simões said that the strike scheduled for May 22 and 23 was suspended, as had already happened with the one on May 8.
"As long as there is no new ombudsman and no board, we have no interlocutor and, therefore, there can be no negotiations," she explained.
Ombudsman Ana Jorge is currently in charge of ongoing management, having been dismissed by the Minister of Labor, Maria do Rosário Ramalho, on April 30.
According to the SEP, the revision of the collective labor agreement is "on hold", after the board had assumed in 2024 "that the negotiation process would take place and that finally the nurses (...) would have the salary increases that they had not had since 2022".
According to Guadalupe Simões, there will be about a thousand professionals, spread across the various areas of Santa Casa, such as nursing homes or the Alcoitão Hospital.
She added that the increase in the salary table, the revision of arduous hours and specific matters for specialist nurses are at stake, which, overall, concern the appreciation of the career and functions.
