Bluefin Tuna and Atlantic Swordfish Fishing May Be Closed

The fishing of bigeye tuna and blue marlin in the Atlantic may be closed, since Portugal has already used 80% of its respective quotas, warned today the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).

"Considering the data from the catches made by the Portuguese bluefin tuna fleet in the Atlantic Ocean, it is reported that the use of the quota has reached 80%", indicated the DGRM in a statement.

Given this scenario, as it mentioned, it may be necessary to close this fishery.

In another note, the DGRM reported that Portugal has also exhausted 80% of the Atlantic blue marlin quota, thus applying the same possibility of closing the fishery.

The DGRM is a central service of the State's direct administration, with administrative autonomy, which aims to develop maritime safety and services, implement fishing policies and preserve resources.
