"What we hear in all meetings is the need to reinforce the commitment to the Portuguese language in different dimensions, in education, in the training of public administration, in the area of justice, also in the area of technical professional education, the need to train as well", Ana Paula Fernandes told Lusa.

The president of the Camões Institute made a visit to Timor-Leste between Wednesday and today to start the negotiation of the next Strategic Cooperation Program (PEC), for the period between 2024-2028.

According to Ana Paula Fernandes, in addition to the Portuguese language, the need to strengthen the capacities of the Timorese public administration to respond to the challenge of joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was also discussed.

During her stay in the Timorese capital, the president of the Camões Institute met with ministers from various portfolios, including the head of Timorese diplomacy, Bendito Freitas, who coordinates the negotiations, and with the prime minister, Xanana Gusmão to hear the Timorese priorities.

"But what is also important here, which I would like to emphasize, is once again the willingness that we hear from all representatives of Timorese public entities to reinforce the Portuguese language and also to do so not only in Dili, but also in the municipalities", stressed Ana Paula Fernandes.

The previous PEC, between 2019-2023, was signed in Lisbon and had foreseen a financial envelope of 70 million euros for interventions in the sectors of Consolidation of the Rule of Law and Good Governance, Education, Training and Culture and Inclusive Socioeconomic Development.

The president of the Camões Institute specified that the execution of the program was 102% and that by the end of the month she should receive from Timor-Leste the "clearly defined priorities" so that the new PEC can be signed before the end of the year.
