Before about 250 thousand pilgrims -- a number released by the Sanctuary of Fátima -- participants in the opening ceremonies of the pilgrimage of May 12 and 13 to Cova da Iria, the Spanish cardinal asked that all let themselves be "looked at by Mary", whose eyes "are eyes of mercy".
In the homily of the Celebration of the Word that followed the candlelight procession, which was attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the middle of the crowd, Cardinal Omella advised the faithful to, before the Virgin, ask "for world peace and for the conversion of sinners".
The archbishop of Barcelona was accompanied in the celebration by two cardinals (António Marto and Américo Aguiar), 22 bishops and 193 priests, before pilgrims from at least 30 countries.
After tonight's celebration, a prayer vigil will follow until 7:00 am on Monday, followed by the recitation of the rosary and international mass, starting at 10:00 am, ending with the traditional Farewell procession.
