"Today, treatments began for some cancer and hematology patients. It will be done in a phased manner and the patients will be contacted by the respective services", said a source from the communication service of the largest health unit in the Azores.

The remaining clinical activity at the facilities of the Hospital de Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, remains suspended due to the fire that occurred about a week ago.

The fire at the hospital in Ponta Delgada, which broke out at 09:40 local time on 04 May (10:40 in Lisbon) and was only declared extinguished at 16:11, forced the transfer of all patients who were hospitalized to various locations in the Azores, Madeira and mainland Portugal.

At the time of the fire, there were 333 patients in the health facility and it was necessary to transfer 240.

The Government of the Azores declared a state of public calamity the following day to "accelerate procedures" that will allow the activity of the largest Azorean health unit to return to normal in a "short period of time".

The clinical management announced on Wednesday that the hospital will be reactivated "slowly".

An accounting of the damage caused by the fire has not yet been released.

In the meantime, the PS/Azores, which had requested a hearing in the regional parliament of the regional secretary for Health, Mónica Seidi, announced today that the Committee on Social Affairs of the Legislative Assembly approved the socialist proposal.

The PS/Azores justified the proposal with the need to "understand and obtain clarifications on the work plan for normalizing the provision of health care in the region", but also to "know the schedule of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) for the resumption of HDES activity", according to the socialist deputy José Miguel Toste, quoted in a press release.

The socialist parliamentarian warns that the fire at HDES "weakened the Regional Health Service", since the largest hospital unit in the region "does not only serve the island of São Miguel", but "all Azoreans who need specialist consultations and, eventually, more complex surgeries".

The proposal to hear the Regional Secretary for Health and Social Solidarity in the Committee on Social Affairs "was approved by a majority, with only the Chega party voting against", the statement also reads.
