Preventive for detainees for being part of a drug trafficking network in the North
Five of the seven people arrested for being part of one of the main drug trafficking networks in the north of the country, including a former PSP, known as 'Joca' and considered by the investigation to be the leader of this criminal organisation, were remanded in custody today.

The seven defendants, detained by the Judiciary Police (PJ) during an operation to combat drug trafficking, carried out on Tuesday, in the city of Porto, were presented for the first judicial interrogation at the Porto Criminal Investigation Court, which applied the most serious measure of coercion to five of them: preventive detention, a judicial source told Lusa.
Two other defendants were subject to the measure of coercion of daily presentations to the authorities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, May 7, the PJ reported that in the operation, carried out on that day, "seven people were arrested, indicted for the crimes of criminal association, drug trafficking and money laundering, and more than 20 domiciliary and non-domiciliary searches were carried out".
"The investigation, which had been ongoing for almost a year, dismantled one of the most important drug trafficking networks in the north of the country, which supplied the main regional networks for the illicit sale of drugs. Among those arrested are the leaders of one of the most important cocaine distribution networks in Greater Porto, the main supplier of trafficking in neighborhoods, namely Pasteleira, Cerco, Francos and Ramalde", the PJ said.
A judicial source had previously told Lusa that one of the detainees was the main suspect and leader of this criminal group, known as 'Joca' and a former PSP agent.
"This is an organized criminal structure, with ramifications in South America, which was responsible for importing, transporting and delivering the illicit substances. The group, considered dangerous, was feared for its violent methods and the use of firearms", the statement said.
Among the various situations investigated by the PJ's Northern Directorate is the seizure, by the Brazilian Federal Police, at the port of Santos, in the summer of 2023, of an agricultural machine that concealed about 43 kilograms of cocaine, ready to be shipped to the port of Leixões, in Matosinhos, in the district of Porto.
"In this case, the PJ identified those involved in the operation to import this drug, as well as the investors who had ordered it", the PJ also said.
During the operation, which had the collaboration of the Porto PSP, 10 high-end vehicles, four high-speed boats (speedboats), about 50 thousand euros in cash, firearms, ammunition and bulletproof vests were seized.
