On 1 February, hundreds of farmers from the Centro region gathered on the A25 in the Alto de Leomil area, about 13 kilometres from Vilar Formoso, and blocked traffic to the border to demand changes in the sector.
The movement's spokesperson, Ricardo Estrela, said that about 50 farmers had already been notified to appear and be identified at the GNR as drivers of the vehicles immobilised in the protest.
Speaking to Lusa, Ricardo Estrela admitted to being surprised by the Public Ministry's position, which he says is causing some indignation among those targeted.
The representative of the farmers who demonstrated on 1 February, similar to protests in other parts of Europe, stressed that on that day care was taken to leave a lane clear for the circulation of priority vehicles and that the alternative of diverting traffic via the national road was not made impossible.
Ricardo Estrela, who has not yet been notified to appear, said he was waiting for further clarification on the process so that the movement could take a position.
The farmers are being notified to appear as part of an investigation "relating, in the abstract, to the practice of the crimes of qualified disobedience, qualified damage and attack on road safety", according to a document to which Lusa had access.
Traffic on the A25 in the Alto de Leomil area was interrupted by the farmers' protest in both directions at around 06:00 on 1 February, with traffic being diverted to National Road 16 between Vilar Formoso and Pínzio, in the municipality of Pinhel. The blockade began to be dismantled around 22:00.
At the time, Ricardo Estrela highlighted to Lusa the merit of the authorities in the way the blockade began and in the decision to anticipate the interruption of traffic.
The protest spokesperson stressed that the farmers did not want there to be any collateral damage.
