Between May 7 and 13, authorities detected a total of 22,600 offenses, of which 713 were related to improper use of mobile phones while driving. 2,732 accidents were also recorded, resulting in 10 fatalities, 57 serious injuries, and 886 minor injuries.

This data is part of the results of the campaign 'At the wheel, the mobile phone can wait', from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP), which aimed to alert drivers to the serious consequences of handling the mobile phone while driving.

In a statement sent to the newsrooms, the security forces revealed that, during the operations carried out between May 7 and 13, 4,607,331 vehicles were inspected in person in mainland Portugal, with a total of 22,576 offenses being registered - of which 713 were related to improper use of the mobile phone while driving.

"In this campaign, a total of 2,732 accidents were recorded, resulting in 10 fatalities, 57 serious injuries and 886 minor injuries. Compared to the same period in 2023, there were 22 fewer accidents, 4 more fatalities, 11 more serious injuries and 8 fewer minor injuries", it can also be read.

Of the 10 fatalities, 9 were men and one was a woman, aged between 29 and 92. The fatal accidents occurred in the districts of Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisbon (3), Setúbal, Évora and Beja. "These accidents consisted of 4 collisions (involving 6 light vehicles, 4 motorcycles and 1 bicycle), 3 skids (involving 2 motorcycles and 1 light vehicle) and 3 run-overs (involving 2 heavy vehicles and 1 light vehicle)", says the statement.

According to the same note, these accidents occurred on five roads, three national roads, one motorway and one complementary itinerary.
