Five men, aged between 22 and 46, were arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) for drug trafficking in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores.

According to a PSP statement sent to newsrooms, the investigation had been ongoing for two years and allowed to determine who was responsible for the network that distributed the drug in different locations on the Azorean island. The police discovered that the main suspect used the collaboration of intermediaries "to distribute hashish, heroin and synthetic drugs to a considerable number of drug addicts, residing in the towns of Ponta Delgada, São Roque, Lagoa and Ribeira Grande".

The PSP then set up a "large-scale" operation and carried out "8 house searches and 6 non-house searches". "Hashish, synthetic drugs, monetary amounts, among other articles related to the crime under investigation" were seized.

Presented to a judge for the first judicial interrogation, two of the defendants were placed under house arrest and the main suspect was placed in preventive detention.

Another defendant, responsible for the distribution of the drug, had already been arrested earlier in another phase of the investigation and is serving an effective prison sentence in the Ponta Delgada prison.
