The Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) seized 450 liters of counterfeit olive oil in Évora on Monday, which was intended to be sold in the vicinity of the city of Lisbon.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Tuesday, ASAE clarified that it carried out an inspection operation on two economic operators, with commercial links between them, who sold the products through social networks. "The marketing of cooking oil as extra virgin olive oil with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) was then detected in flagrante delicto, with the amount of 30 euros being charged for each 5-liter package".

In addition to the 450 liters of counterfeit olive oil, ASAE also seized "hundreds of counterfeit labels, two vehicles and various documentary evidence of the crime". Following the inspection, two criminal proceedings were instituted for fraud on goods, falsification of documents and illegal use of designation of origin or geographical indication.

In total, the value of the seizure amounts to 40 thousand euros. The suspects were constituted as defendants and are subject to a term of identity and residence.

"ASAE will continue to carry out inspection actions, within the scope of its competences, throughout the national territory, in favor of healthy and fair competition between economic operators, safeguarding food safety and public health of consumers", can still be read in the statement.
