The alert, issued by nine organizations, comes after the announcement by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro that the Government approved today the construction of a new airport for the Lisbon region in Alcochete, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission.
In a statement, the environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) considered the decision-making process for the new airport to be positive, and they welcomed the fact that the Montijo option has been definitively set aside.
"It is a huge victory for the ENGOs, but above all for the country," they said.
In the statement, the organizations emphasize the importance of investing in a rail network that operates in complementarity with the current and future airport network.
And they warn that Humberto Delgado Airport must have "severe operating restrictions" due to the damage to public health. In addition, they add, the measures for the current airport to continue operating until the new airport is ready should be subject to an environmental impact assessment.
The statement is signed by the organizations Almargem, Natureza Portugal Association/World Wide Fund for Nature (ANP/WWF), FAPAS-Portuguese Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity, Group for Studies on Land Use Planning and the Environment (GEOTA), League for the Protection of Nature (LPN), Quercus-National Association for the Conservation of Nature, A Rocha, Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), and ZERO-Sustainable Terrestrial System Association.
