Airport in Alcochete? AMRS says it is a "correct decision"
The president of the Association of Municipalities of the Setúbal Region (AMRS), André Martins, said today that the construction of the new airport in Alcochete is a correct and fundamental decision for the region and for the country.

"Finally, a decision was made that is fundamental for the entire Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, but in particular for the Setúbal peninsula, because it is a possibility of public investment that promotes development and constitutes an extremely important incentive for the development of the region", he said.
Associated with the location of the new airport, "there is a need to build a third Tagus crossing, a logistics platform, connections to the ports of Setúbal, Lisbon and Sines, and a connection to Spain", added André Martins, who is also mayor of the municipality of Setúbal.
The mayor of Setúbal recalled that in 1987 he participated in the studies on the Integrated Plan for the Development of the District of Setúbal (PIDDS) which, already at that time, pointed to the location of the new airport in Alcochete.
"Studies, plans, projects were made, namely the Regional Plan for Spatial Planning of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (PROT-AML) which also pointed to the location of the airport in Alcochete, and there was an environmental impact statement, which was allowed to expire", he recalled.
The Government today approved the construction of the new airport for the Lisbon region in Alcochete, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI), announced the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro.
"The Government decided to approve the development of the new Lisbon airport with a view to the complete replacement of Humberto Delgado Airport at the Alcochete Shooting Range and to give it the name of Luís de Camões Airport", announced Luís Montenegro, in a statement to the country, after an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, this afternoon.
On March 11, the CTI published the final report of the strategic environmental assessment of the new airport, maintaining the recommendation of a single solution in Alcochete.
